The primary responsibility of an assistant professor is to conduct assigned undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars. Additionally, the assistant professor is to serve as academic advisor to students; serve on college or university committees; engage in scholarly activities, and/or creative endeavors which contribute to the academic mission of the University.
Associate Professors are roughly equivalent to senior lecturers. The term is used in U.S. universities and in a few U.K. institutions. They teach students at further or higher education institutions. Teaching usually takes place during the day between 9am and 6pm although some associate professors are also required to teach in the evenings. Associate professors divide their time between classroom hours and preparing for teaching or meeting students privately.
Professors' responsibilities at UMD are typically divided between teaching, research, and service.
The teaching responsibilities are the most visible: learning the material (this can take years, especially for some upper level courses), keeping up to date with current advances in both research and pedagogy, choosing an appropriate textbook, preparing lectures, supervising teaching assistants, grading, etc.
