Self-assessment/self-evaluation is the key activity in striving to achieve the best performance. It’s the yearning to accomplish a level of excellence, by tracking the progress and determining the developmental areas.

What is self-evaluation?

Performing a self-evaluation gives a new perspective on what we can do well, where our challenges lie and what to seek, in pursuit of our career goals. It’s about a creative way to think and analyze about, where we are in our career and the possibilities that lie ahead.

How to self-evaluate?

Mostly we look at our strengths and weaknesses but we often oversee the external factors that affect the direction of our careers. Ask yourself questions and answer honestly to generate meaningful results. List all your strengths, what makes you unique and different.

  • Identify your strengths by briefing your skills, talents, your connections, values and ethics.
  • Carefully examine the areas that need improvement, any weaknesses, any additional requirement of education/training, things you regularly avoid, any negative feedback about your work habits etc.
  • Look at the external factors which can help you pursue a promotion, find a new job, determine a career path etc. The factors include the state of the economy, new technology, growth of your industry, demand for a skill that you possess, changes in the business environment, feedback about your improvement in mannerisms etc.
  • Finally list any threats to your career growth. The factors that could hurt your chances of growth such as strong competition in your job, your inabilities, changes in the industry, new certification requirements that can impede your progress, any professional standards that are hard to meet etc.

Once you have stated all the factors, it is time to analyze that information and build a strategy to determine a course of action. The areas where you can be dashing and where you should work on or situations to avoid will be clearly laid out in front of you.

Exposing your attributes in this manner can be useful to turn your negatives into positives, converting your weaknesses into strengths or threats into opportunities. This can provoke you to find an environment that suits to your personality.

It is important to follow the practices and implement the insights, once you have identified your weaknesses and threats. How you react to a potential threat once it is identified, paves your path towards a favorable outcome. The best end-result can benefit you personally and professionally, setting you apart from your peers and colleagues.
